REVIEW
Talking Rocks and Minerals presents young readers with information about basic geology. The illustrations show rocks and minerals with faces making them seem like friendly characters. Pebble is the book's host, taking readers on a 'tour' of the geology world. Speech bubbles show the 'characters' talking to one another and sharing lots of geology puns. The regular text gives introductory information about what minerals are, the three types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic), as well as examples of each type of rock. Side bars present extra fun facts such as the largest amethyst known is called the Empress of Uruguay and weighs 5,000 pounds and is over 10 feet tall. The rock cycle is presented in an easy-to understand diagram. Many of the double-page spreads are broken into panels to share information in bite-size pieces. Back matter includes a glossary (the words in the glossary are shared in the main text using a unique font and color), a list of books that give more information, ideas for rock collecting, and a note from a marine geologist, as well as information about the author and illustrator. The book makes for a delightful introduction to the world of rocks perfect for young rock collectors. Teachers or home schoolers would also find the book a great reference or introduction to geology. The text is very child friendly and the specific terms are all defined in the glossary as well as explained in the text and illustrations. Highly recommended.
