WILD & WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY: Hello, I'm a Toucan by Hayley & John Rocco

ABOUT THE BOOK

Meet the toucan in this clever, funny, and informative nonfiction picture book, part of a series that focuses on endangered species.

Did you know a toucan's bill is four times the size of its head? But you might be surprised by how lightweight and strong it is.

And did you know that toucans use their bills to keep cool when it's hot outside, by increasing blood flow from the rest of their body to maintain the perfect temperature? You can't get much cooler than that.

But did you also know the toucan is endangered and needs our help? With humans chopping down rainforests and taking toucans from their homes to make them pets, these unique birds need our protection more than ever.

Chock-full of amazing, kid-friendly facts and inviting artwork from the #1 New York Timesbestselling, Caldecott Honoree illustrator of Blackout, the Meet the Wild Things series introduces young readers to endangered animals from around the globe, told from the points of view of the animals themselves.

REVIEW

As with the other books in the Meet the Wild Things series, young readers are introduced to an endangered animal first through facts about the animal and then through information about why it's endangered and what is being done about it.  The gorgeous illustrations practically leap off the page. The informative text is presented as if the animal itself is speaking making the book feel more personal. The inclusion of questions about the young reader or listener makes the book interactive and encourages discussion between reader and listeners such as a teacher and students, a parent and child, or two child readers. The back matter includes additional information about the animal, toucans in this case, why they are endangered (explained in more detail), and information about where students can go online to learn more about the animal and maybe even get involved in helping to save them. A wonderful addition to the series that young readers are bound to not only enjoy but learn from and maybe even be inspired by. Highly recommended.
