PICTURE BOOK REVIEW: Fall is for Beginnings by Rajani LaRocca & Abhi Alwar

ABOUT THE BOOK
Ravi’s not so sure about Ellie—she plays her horn too loud in music lessons and gets them lost on the way to class. Worst of all, she keeps saying she’s Joe and Ravi’s best friend.
All these big changes are challenging for Ravi, but with time (and a little help from his wise older sister) he realizes that fall is the perfect time to begin a new friendship.
From the award-winning team behind Summer Is for Cousins, this heartwarming picture book all about back-to-school fun celebrates the (sometimes complicated) joy of making new friends.
REVIEW
Ravi heads back to school excited to see his best friend, Joe. He's not so excited when Ellie inserts herself into their friendship. He's okay with trying new things to add leaves to his class picture of a tree, but he doesn't agree that Ellie is going to be their new best friend. As fall continues, Ravi's frustration with Ellie builds until finally he tells Ellie that they are not best friends. Ellie withdraws. Can Ravi learn to accept a new friendship? With the help of an older, wiser sister, he just may be ready for one more beginning. This lovely book highlights some of the changes that come with the new season. The child-friendly illustrations highlight the struggle Ravi has accepting a new friend but also the joy that comes when he does. The joys of fall and beginnings of all kinds shines through in this appealing tale. Recommended for both one-on-one and story time reading.
