BOARD BOOKS: Belly Button Book! & Peekaboo Rex! & Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs! All by Sandra Boynton

REVIEW

Sandra Boynton's books always bring a smile to my face. As Boynton demonstrates, there are certain words or phrases that naturally make children smile.  Belly button is one of those phrases. What makes this book even funnier is the baby hippo who can't pronounce belly button yet and so refers to that body part by saying "Bee Bo!" Hippos love belly b's apparently and love to show them off at the beach, specifically, Belly Button Beach. In fact they love their belly buttons so much they even have a song about them. Boynton's buoyant hippos are adorable as well as amusing.  This fun board book would make for a delightful read with a baby or toddler.

REVIEW

This delightful book is likely to induce giggles in young listeners.  A wide-eyed t-rex plays hide and seek with a younger, smaller dinosaur.  Unfortunately, the large dinosaur doesn't really manage to hide at all leading the young dinosaur to keep saying, "Peekaboo" with great delight. I especially enjoyed the two double spreads showing the dinosaur dressed like Waldo attempting to hide in a crowd (not easy to do when you tower over everyone else). This delightful board book is bound to inspire multiple games of peekaboo and/or hide and seek.  The rhyming text and cute illustrations make a winning combination.

REVIEW

Dinosaurs happy, dinosaurs sad, dinosaurs good, and dinosaurs bad, Sandra Boynton presents young readers with a wide variety of different dinosaurs with all kinds of characteristics or doing things differently. Using rhyming text and her well-known line drawings, Boynton entertains her young audience with song and dance and lots of opposites. I have to say that my favorite drawing is the one of the dinosaurs crammed in an elevator looking uncomfortably wide-eyed. I marvel at Boynton's ability to create so many emotions on the faces of her dinosaurs with just a few lines in the write place. Another fun title that engages young readers in the joyful experience of learning to read.
