Matthew Cordell's New Early Reader CORNBREAD & POPPY Delights!
ABOUT THE BOOK
Caldecott medalist Matthew Cordell debuts his first early reader series about two best friends who are as different from each other as can be.
Cornbread LOVES planning. Poppy does not. Cornbread ADORES preparing. Poppy does not. Cornbread IS ready for winter. Poppy...is not. But Cornbread and Poppy are the best of friends, so when Poppy is left without any food for the long winter, Cornbread volunteers to help her out. Their search leads them up, up, up Holler Mountain, where these mice might find a new friend...and an old one. Celebrating both partnership and the value of what makes us individuals, young readers will find this classic odd-couple irresistible as they encounter relatable issues with humor and heart.
REVIEW
This adorable early reader follows the adventures of mice friends Cornbread and Poppy as they search for food to help Poppy survive the winter. Cornbread's plans ensured that he has all the food he needs to last all winter. But Poppy's adventuresome spirit kept her busy hiking and biking and swinging. Now when she's ready to build up her food storage it's too late, the food is all gone. Despite their best efforts, Cornbread and Poppy are unable to find any food in the valley. But when Poppy proposes looking on Holler Mountain, both mice are frightened. Rumors about an owl and the disappearance of a friend cause both mice to be hesitant. But since it's the only option left for Poppy, the two mice bravely set out to investigate the mountain. Poppy and Cornbread are delightful characters with similarities and differences. Their friendship holds the story together just as it does in other early reader stories such as Elephant & Piggie or Frog and Toad. Cordell's pen and ink drawings are beautifully complimented with watercolor and wonderfully add to the fun of the story. Some of Poppy and Cornbread's facial expressions are especially amusing. Overall, a wonderful addition to early reader collections and perfect for sharing with young readers. Highly recommended.
