Early Chapter Books : I Want My Mummy by Nancy Krulik & Our Principal is a Scaredy-Cat! by Stephanie Calmenson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Learning is an adventure in Ms. Frogbottom’s class, because she’s got a magic map—one that takes her students all over the world to battle with mythical monsters no one believes are real. All Ms. Frogbottom has to do is take out the map, tap a country, and— SHAZAAM!—off they go to a place somewhere far, far away.

When Ms. Frogbottom whisks the class away to Egypt, they not only come face to face with a mummy, but have to solve the riddle of his ancient curse!

Bestselling and beloved author Nancy Krulik ingeniously approaches geography in a new way, as the kids learn about the places they visit while fighting, fleeing, or in some cases rescuing monsters.

REVIEW

Poor Tony, the narrator of I Want My Mummy! isn't thrilled when his teacher, Ms. Frogbottom whisks the class away to Egypt using her magic map.  Tony doesn't particularly enjoy riding camels or suspicious black cats that only Sofia can see, nor is he excited to visit the tombs of ancient Egyptians.  When Sofia goes missing, Tony and his friends (and the teacher) look for her in the Valley of the Kings where they get stuck in a tomb with a mummy.  Integrating facts about Egypt, its culture and geography throughout the book, Krulik has created a fun new series involving magical travel and amusing adventures for the early chapter book crowd.  Briggs exaggerated, amusing illustrations add a light touch to the fun.  An enjoyable new series for young readers eager to learn about the world while experiencing some magical adventures.  Great for readers who enjoy the Magic Tree House or Magic School Bus series.

REVIEW

This book in the Aladdin Quix series for early chapter book readers follows the experiences of a principal named Mr. Bundy who keeps having rather unfortunate things happen to him.  In this tale, he stumbles upon a 'spiffy' hat that he carries to school with him.  Someone wants the hat back, however, and tells him so in a spooky way.  When he's alone in his office, he hears whispers that scare him into spending the rest of the day out of his office.  After visits to the nurse, a kindergarten classroom, and the cafeteria, where he hears the voice again, he calls Marty the (bad) magician for help.  But Marty is clearly in over his head.  Can Marty and Mr. Bundy find a way to appease the voice or is Mr. Bundy doomed to be haunted forever?  This book is more amusing than scary and most young readers are likely to figure out what the voice wants fairly quickly.  What makes the book funny is Mr. Bundy's reaction to the voice and his ineptitude.  Clearly a pleasant fellow, but not real quick on the uptake.  Young readers are likely to enjoy Mr. Bundy and his misadventure as well as the pleasant details about his school. The large font size, short chapters, and glossary make the book well-organized and useful as well as enjoyable.
