REVIEW

The beautiful illustrations of Forests wonderfully complements the poetic text. As in Beckerman's previous works, Caves and Volcanoes, she combines short poetic text with longer expository text, providing readers an opportunity to enjoy the book as a work of art highlighting the beauties of forests or as an informative read aloud with fascinating tidbits of information about various kinds of forests around the world. The author introduces readers to the characteristics of forests, the dangers and benefits of wildfires, and the specific characteristics of a few specific forests such as Mexico's Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve and Poland's Crooked Forest. Chock's digital artwork beautifully complements the poetry giving readers a glimpse into the wonders of forest habitats. All kinds of forests are depicted including a underwater kelp forest, an urban forest, a bamboo forest, and a number of other kinds of forests. The book provides a nice overview of the wide variety of different kinds of forests before showing readers the dangers that most forests face in terms of environmental damage. The book ends by encouraging readers to help protect the world's remaining forests. The back matter includes an Author's Note, an Illustrator's Note, further reading and viewing suggestions for young readers who want to know more. Additional information about the value of forests, planting trees, and other fascinating forests around the world. Beckerman and Chock have once again created an informative book that is also a work of art.
