PICTURE BOOK REVIEW: Fierce Aunties by Laurel Goodluck & Steph Littlebird

ABOUT THE BOOK
Who do you go to for advice and support? Or when you want an adventure and a little extra courage? Or when you need to find that warrior spirit inside you? Fierce aunties!
Aunties come in different shapes, sizes, and ages. They all have different laughs, skills, and stories. They might be your parents’ sisters, your older cousins, or even family friends. But there’s something they all have in common. They’re fierce, they love you, and they’ll help make everything better.
REVIEW
Fierce Aunties is a beautifully illustrated ode to the women in a young Native Nations girl's life.
"When your parents don't get your jokes,
when half listening just won't do,
there are somebodies you can count on....
FIERCE AUNTIES!"
A variety of women step forward to provide leadership and support to this young girl. Highlighted in poems, a young girl is aided in learning to ride her bike, graduating, and learning how to work. She's shown how to plant and take care of a garden and participate in cultural dancing. References to indigenous culture and knowledge, the book honors the legacy of fierce aunties. An author's note at the end of the book highlights the fierce aunties the author has seen in her own life and that of her children. The digitally-created illustrations jump off the page in their bright color, emphasizing the love and hope and courage manifested by the girl and her 'aunties'. A book designed to inspire memories of our own 'fierce aunties' and encourage the love and support that all children need, whether from biological family members, teachers, coaches, or other mentors. Gorgeous all around! Highly recommended.
