PICTURE BOOK REVIEW: Bruce Saves the Planet by Ryan T. Higgins

ABOUT THE BOOK

From unwitting mother to unwitting . . . environmental activist?

Save the planet with #1 New York Times best-selling author-illustrator Ryan T. Higgins's beloved Mother Bruce.

Bruce was a bear who liked to be by himself. But that wasn't easy for him, as mother to four geese and three mice. Luckily, he could enjoy a day of peace and quiet while fishing.

But his quiet haven is full of beetles stealing his lunch. And protestors loudly trying to save the forest from the construction of a factory. Will Bruce and the residents of Soggy Hollow manage to save the planet?

REVIEW

Bruce finds himself inadvertently at the heart of a protest to stop the destruction of the local forest. As per the norm for this grumpy bear, Bruce wants some peace and quiet. When he can't find it at home, he heads to the woods to go fishing. His efforts at fishing go awry when some beetles come along and steal his bait and his lunch. Frustrated he heads home only to be dragged into a protest over a coming factory. Using his trademark humor, Higgins shares with readers a funny, yet serious tale of activism. While Bruce's activism is accidental, he still manages to help his unwelcome furry friends save the forest for which he is paid by having the new park named after him. While appropriate for any age, slightly older readers are likely to understand the humor and clever touches by the author/illustrator. A fun way for children to learn about environmental stewardship.
