REVIEW

Opening with a stunning poem about where she's from, Renee Watson presents readers with a glimpse into her life growing up as a black girl in the Pacific Northwest. She shares both the good and back in her experience. Some poems are heartbreaking, others truly inspiring and uplifting. Some of the poems are short, only a few lines, but pack a punch. Others are like a journey on a river with calm spots and rough spots. Holmes art beautifully complements the beauty of Watson's poems. While aimed specifically at black girls and the challenges they face there is much here that girls of any race can be inspired by, courage and resilience, love and hope. heartbreak and heartache, all shine through the truly remarkable combination of words and pictures. This book is a classic in the making.
