REVIEW

April Pulley Sayre's beautiful poetry and amazing photography in Happy Sloth Day make this a stunning example of picture book nonfiction. Beginning with a damp sloth, Sayre takes readers through some of the remarkable aspects of a sloth's life.  Body temperature, camouflage capabilities, good and digestion, movement, and anatomy are all introduced in short poems.  Photographs and sidebars provide additional information.  A few of a sloth's neighbors, friend and foe, are included, giving readers a glimpse into a fascinating, complex ecosystem.  Both three-toed and two-toed sloths are described with their similarities and differences.  The additional information in the back matter along with a brief description of how and where the photographs were obtained add to the book's value.  Above all, this book is a tribute to the natural world and it's beauty.  There is much to be appreciated and learned from this great book.
