SERIES THURSDAY: Sofia Martinez by Jacqueline Jules

ABOUT THE BOOK

Follow 7-year-old Sofia Martinez as she deals with her family and daily adventures. Sofia Martinez has a big personality and big plans, which makes every dia memorable.  Between her sisters and cousins, her familia is the focus of her many aventuras. From taking school pictures to doing chores, this 7-year-old knows how to make every moment count.

REVIEW

Sofia Martinez is a fun little girl who wants to world to notice her.  In each of the three stories in this short early chapter book, Sofia sets out with the best of intentions.  In Picture Perfect, Sofia is determined to make her family take notice of her.  But when switching picture frames with her older sister doesn't do the trick she has to come up with something else that will have her family oohing and aahing over her upcoming school pictures.  In Abuela's birthday, Sofia decides she wants to make a pinata.  So with the help of her cousins she sets out to do so, unfortunately, things don't go according to plan and the results involve a cat, flour, and a bathtub.  The Missing Mouse presents Sofia with the opportunity to search for the pet mouse that escaped while in her care.  Jules has written a sweet and fun series that's right up there with the Judy Moody series in terms of fun and character.  The inclusion of Spanish words works well with definitions included at the end for those like me who are curious about the official definitions.  Context helps a lot in figuring out what the Spanish words mean.  Books like this are becoming ever more important as the need for diverse books continues to grow.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Sofia and her family are headed to the beach for the weekend, and Sofia is packed and ready to go. But once they get to the beach house, it's obvious that Sofia did not pack basic beach gear. Will her beach trip be ruined? Spanish words are used throughout this early chapter book.

REVIEW

Sofia is looking forward to the beach trip that her family takes every year.  She loves being with her immediate and extended familia.  But she struggles to know what to pack, clothes or board games.  Eventually determining that having games is more important than the other things, Sofia leaves most of her clothing behind.  But she just might save the day when the weather takes a turn for the worse or maybe she'll just be unprepared.  Another cute story about Sofia, a girl who definitely has her own ideas about things.  This is a fun series for young readers who won't have a hard time relating to Sofia's priorities.

ABOUT THE BOOK

After a strong storm, Sofia and her family are without power. Sofia and her dad head to the store to buy supplies and come home with the perfect plan to have fun with or without power! This early chapter book includes Spanish words.

REVIEW

Sofia and her family are forced to come up with other plans when a storm knocks out the power.  But as always, Sofia is prepared with some ways for her family to enjoy the evening, power or no power.  Sofia is a delightful character that young readers are bound to enjoy, with her boundless enthusiasm and great ideas.  The full color illustrations along with the Spanish words and glossary also make this book a great addition to diverse collections for young readers.
