GUEST POST
The story behind the story
Secrets of the Red Box was
inspired by an event that happened to my father. I can't reveal that
event without giving away the basis for the plot! It was story I wanted
to tell because of the grave consequences that transpire when lying and
deceit are practiced. I also wanted to show the redemptive power of love
and forgiveness, two very compelling themes in this book.
My protagonist, Bonnie, is a
very flawed character, but she is also one that is able to grow and
change, which makes her very real. I had to walk a fine line between
keeping her likable and exploring the dangers of her secrets. I wanted
the reader to find sympathy for Bonnie and keep them rooting for her to
the very end.
I patterned some of Bonnie's
characteristics after a woman I knew (now deceased). She was always a
bit of a mystery to me and I wondered what made her the way she was. I
never really knew the answer to that, but I was able to create plausible
reasons for Bonnie's behavior. I think Bonnie is one of the most
satisfying characters I've ever created.
The choices we make inevitably have consequences, sometimes good, sometimes bad, and sometimes a combination of both. In this book, Bonnie makes some choices that come back to haunt her. People change over time due to circumstances, choices, and the relationships that develop. When secrets from Bonnie's past are revealed, Bonnie and her young family must face the consequences as painful as they might be. I found it heart-wrenching to follow Bonnie as she tries to make a new life for herself, only to find that her choices from the past must be dealt with in order for there to be any hope for the future. A powerful story about the dangers of lies and deception, but the power of love and forgiveness.
