CHAPTER BOOK FICTION : Shermy and Shake, the Not-So-Unhappy-Campers by Kirby Larson (Available Nov 17, 2026)

ABOUT THE BOOK

Unlikely best pals Shermy and Shake go on a fun road trip, meet a brand-new baby, and spend the weekend at a real sleepaway camp in a season full of adventure and steadfast friendship. Awesome-possum!

Shermy takes his time and thinks things through, while his best friend, Shake, likes to jump in with both feet. But like peanut butter and sweet pickles, the two boys go together perfectly. Whether it’s crafting leprechaun traps, going to Camp Hootie Hoot with the Owl Scouts, or tackling the school talent show (Shake wants to perform, but Shermy would prefer to cheer from the audience), they bring out the best in each other—even when things are tough. When Shermy’s dog Wally escapes from the yard, Shake comes running to help Shermy search everywhere. And when Shake is nervous about meeting his new baby sister at the hospital, Shermy shows him how to hold her safely. Humor, worry, and excitement flavor a series of charming adventures in the fourth and final kid’s-eye-view installment of this delightful series.

REVIEW

The fourth book in the Shermy and Shake series finds Shermy and Shake getting ready for camp. Having a best friend makes life better whether it's building leprechaun traps, selling scout cookies, or going on road trips. But friends can be complicated too as Shermy experiences when he's frustrated with Shake's advice about his trap, or the disappointment of no firsts for him on the road trip, or a talent show invitation he really doesn't want to accept. But friends step up when required like when Shake's nervous about meeting his new sister, or Shake helps Shermy search for his dog when Wally goes missing. And Owl Scout camp proves to be just the thing to cement their friendship. This fun series about the two 2nd graders makes a great chapter book read for fans of Stink by Megan McDonald or Henry Hecklebeck by Wanda Coven with appealing characters. The episodic nature of the stories makes it great for a read-aloud as well. Recommended.
