Puffins' small size allows them to nest among the rocks on the Maine's Eastern Egg Rock Island. Puffins come to land only to mate and raise a single chick. Readers follow the hatching and development of one young female chick in this beautifully designed nonfiction picture book. The use of neon orange makes the book hard to miss. The neon orange allows the puffins unique beak to stand out on every page making the book one that is bound to catch the eye of young readers. The inclusion of exciting moments makes the book quite an exciting read with the puffins facing off with seagulls, a demanding chick, and the open ocean. The combination of graphic panels with full page spreads allows the author to share information while the illustrator brings the information to life with more illustrations than are found in a typically designed picture book. The minimal word use allows the book to work well as a read aloud. The narrative style provides information while telling the story of one young puffin and the challenges of growing up puffin. The last few spreads provide additional information for interested readers. A wonderful combination of information, story, and gorgeous artwork. Highly recommended.
