REVIEW

The first volume in the Delicious Duos series, Mac & Cheese uses many puns and food related jokes to tell the story of Mac, the macaroni pasta noodle, and Cheese, a hunk of cheese who happens to be the king of Quesoland. Despite his efforts to blend in with the other noodles, Mac doesn't have any close friends. He sets off to find such a friend. But the snacks don't like his jokes, his songs don't win over the candy and the desserts reject him as well. Finally he tackles the mountain that leads to Quesoland. Meanwhile, Cheese struggles to learn how to be a good king. At first he's too lenient, then too strict, he even tries being vegan, but he too can't find anyone willing to overlook his status to be his friend. Mac and Cheese meet and click when King Cheese finds his jokes hilarious. Made for reading aloud with all the food puns and jokes, the book is reminiscent of Jory John's beloved Food Group series. The bright, colorful illustrations delight with all kinds of fun details (melting ice cream having a tantrum and Mac getting chased by a 'very sour patch of kids'). Young readers will find much here to enjoy as well as a reminder of the power of persistence and the joys of finding a place to belong. A true delight from beginning to end. Highly recommended.
