EARLY CHAPTER BOOK REVIEWS : A Surprise for Willow & A Wish for Lily by Bea Jackson

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lily, the fairy, tries to help her human friend, Willow, overcome her stage fright in this first chapter book in the Fairies Welcome series from New York Times bestselling illustrator Bea Jackson.

Even though Lily is a fairy and Willow is a little human girl, they’ve become the closest of pals, singing sweet songs, counting twinkly stars, and enjoying yummy snacks.

When Willow tells Lily she’s super nervous about performing in a big school celebration, Lily isn’t sure how to help her. Then, with fairies Sky and Jasmine by her side, Lily comes up with a they’ll surprise Willow at school! But will their secret plan be too dangerous, especially for teeny tiny fairies?

REVIEW

In this cute early chapter book, a girl named Willow is preparing to perform as a butterfly in an upcoming school celebration. In an effort to help, Lily, Sky, and Jasmine, who are fairies, sneak into Willow's backpack and accompany her to school. But Willow's shock when she discovers them threatens to upend their plan. After nearly being discovered, Lily and her friends, encourage and cheer Willow on as she performs. This opening entry in a new chapter book series offers a sweet friendship story with a dash of magic. One thing that bothered me though is several illustrations that contradict the text. For example, hiding in a lunch bag attached to a backpack, except there is no lunch bag in the illustrations, the fairies are shown hiding in a pocket of the backpack. There are a number of other times when this occurs. Young readers however may not even notice this issue. All in all a sweet tale of magic and friendship.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Willow takes her fairy friends to see the ocean in this second chapter book in the Fairies Welcome series from New York Times bestselling illustrator Bea Jackson.

When Willow tells her fairy friends Lily, Sky, and Jasmine all about the beach—the sunsets over the ocean, the stars, and the moonlight—the fairies want to see it for themselves. At first, Willow is super careful not to let her friends get too close to the powerful ocean, but the fairies complain they’re not having fun!

Willow compromises by showing them how to build a sandcastle, and all goes well…until a giant wave sweeps Sky out to sea! Can they save her or is she lost forever?

REVIEW

Lily, Sky, and Jasmine head to the beach with their human friend, Willow. They enjoy their trip and the marvels of the beach up until Sky gets swept out to sea in a sand pail. Can Lily, Jasmine, and Willow find a way to save their friend? Jackson presents young readers with another highly illustrated chapter book about the fairies and their friend, Willow. The black-and-white illustrations are lovely with lots of fun details to notice. The mix of illustrations and text makes the book much less intimidating for readers new to chapter books. A fun tale of friendship and adventure with just enough magic to encourage young readers to use their imagination.
