REVIEW

Jellyfish (which ironically are not actually fish) come in many shapes and sizes, a fact that this book highlights beautifully. Hermansson's gorgeous artwork takes Jameson's poetic text and runs with it. The art shows all kinds of jellies from many different angles and perspectives as well as highlighting some of the many varieties (200+ species). The use of different sizes of text provides the reader with the opportunity to emphasize the ending word of each section of the poem. This makes the book perfect for reading aloud. Young listeners could even be encouraged to join in on the highlighted words. The brief text conveys a surprising amount of information in it's rhythmic style, helping readers learn about how jellyfish move, hunt, and avoid predators.  Each two-page spread is highlighted in the back matter with additional information about what's going on in the picture. A Did You Know? section provides extra information about jellyfish in aquariums, jellyfish research, and the effects of climate change on jellies. The final section of the back matter presents additional information about 22 specific kinds of jellyfish shown in the book. While there are no sources listed, the book provides a compelling introduction to this most remarkable of living creatures. Teachers will find much here to use in classrooms for units on habitats, unusual creatures, and/or units on poetry. Young animal lovers will simply enjoy the fantastic way the information is shared and be eager to share what they've learned. Highly recommended.
