WILD & WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY: Polecat has a Superpower by Jill Esbaum & Bob Shea

ABOUT THE BOOK
The polecat has a super cool superpower you’d probably never guess. Why? Well, first, he’s usually only awake when the rest of us are sleeping! Second, he is NOT a baby skunk, despite what everyone says, so he can do more than spray his predators. And third, his superpower isn’t something he normally shows to friends. But today he’s happy to show you (and one nervous porcupine) what it is! After we get to know him of course.
Will you be able to guess the superpower? Read this book to find out!
REVIEW
Polecat Has a Superpower introduces young readers to the animal known as a polecat. Polecat explains that he is a spotted skunk before proceeding to share facts about himself such as where he likes to live. The arrival of a porcupine adds excitement as the polecat continues to share facts about himself such as his climbing ability, eating preferences, and his camouflage coat. Yet as he keeps referring to his 'superpower', porcupine thinks he knows what that power is, yet is surprised when polecat finally reveals it. Although young animal lovers are likely to already recognize the superpower (and no it isn't the stinky spray as one might expect). Shea's cartoon-like illustrations make the story bright and appealing. This fictional book presents information in a fun and entertaining way. True or False statements at the end of the story add to the fun. No additional back matter is included. Recommended as a fun way to introduce information to young readers through the fictional interaction of the polecat and the porcupine. It would be fun to encourage young listeners to compare the two animals forms of defense.
