REVIEW
Having never been to one, this joy-filled look into the workings of a black barbershop opened my eyes. The young boy at the heart of the story doesn't just get his hair cut, oh, no, he has an entire experience with the 'shop as a place to listen to music, talk about historical figures, play, and watch sports. Apparently, $5 will 'have you full.' The catchy text would be easy to read as a rap that will have kids tapping their feet. Based on the author's memories, the book highlights the enjoyment to be found in what seems like a pretty simple, everyday experience. And yet, I have a strong feeling that once shared this book will inspire many a young person to share their own hair-related experiences. Daley's gorgeous digital art beautifully brings out the joy to be found in the text. It's enough to make one feel pulled into the experience. A delightful book all around. Highly recommended.
