PICTURE BOOK REVIEW: Lily's Dream by Bea Jackson

ABOUT THE BOOK

A flightless fairy befriends a human girl and discovers her magic in this enchanting picture book from the New York Times bestselling illustrator of Parker Looks Up.

Lily is a young fairy determined to learn to fly just like the others who soar on shimmering, jeweled-colored wings, but she’s worried her own colorless wings will never lift her off the ground. Then she meets a young girl named Willow who helps her not only discover her special magic, but the truly magical gift of friendship.

REVIEW

Young fairy fans are bound to be thrilled with this adorable tale of a young fairy learning to fly. Jackson's gorgeous illustrations make this story of friendship and persistence stand out. The cover alone is likely to attract young readers. As far as the story goes, Lily's efforts to learn how to fly marked by continual failure  will be easy for readers to understand. When Lily meets Willow, a young human girl with a fascination with fairies, she finds a friend. And learning to fly may just become easier with a friend in her corner and the assistance of a fairy-size trampoline and acorn helmet. The digitally rendered illustrations shine off the page. I also appreciated the ending that sees Lily getting closer to her dreams but not quite there yet. An author's note reminds readers of the magic to be found in both one's imagination and the natural world. The author's note also indicates more books about Lily and Willow will be forthcoming. Young readers who fall in love with Lily and her dreams will be delighted to follow her into further adventures.
