WILD & WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY: Over and Under the Wetlands by Kate Messner & Christopher Silas Neal

ABOUT THE BOOK

Discover the hidden magic of the Everglades in this fascinating and beautiful exploration of the wetland habitat from the New York Times bestselling author and award-winning illustrator of the beloved Over and Under series!

Part of the acclaimed nature book series that includes Over and Under the Pond, Over and Under the Rainforest, and Over and Under the Snow, this volume takes readers on a journey into the magical and mysterious reaches of Florida’s Everglades National Park.

Over the swamp, the barred owl hoots, and the great egret swoops down on snowy wings. The slow mazes of waterways are quiet with the shush of reeds and grasses. But under the swamp’s soft shadows, there’s a whole hidden world of panthers and orchids, red-bellied turtles and raccoons, lurking alligators and singing frogs. This beautifully illustrated nonfiction picture book reveals all the fascinating creatures living just out of sight in the branches and depths over and under the wetland.

REVIEW

The Over and Under series by Kate Messner & Christopher Neal takes readers on field trips into a variety of ecosystems. As in the other titles in the series, the book follows a child and adult as they explore the chosen habitat. In this case, a girl and her grandmother, walk along a boardwalk through a wetland based on Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Southwest Florida. As they walk along they see all kinds of animals such as a barred owl, a pig frog, banded water snake, and an alligator. The animals are doing all kinds of different things including hunting, singing or croaking, swimming, and sleeping. The lyrical text works perfectly for reading out loud, creating a symphony of experiences and highlighting the remarkable nature of the wetland habitat. The illustrator's gorgeous pictures beautifully complement Messner's charming text making for a true work of art. A great book for young readers who love the natural world and learning about it; the book works great as a read aloud for story time and school as well. Highly recommended.
