WILD & WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY: Tree Hole Homes by Melissa Stewart & Amy Herron

REVIEW

A young girl wanders into the woods, climbs into a hole in a tree and wonders, "What would it be like to live inside a tree?" The rest of the book introduces readers to some of the animals that live in trees including barred owls, deer mice, a fisher, raccoons, tree frogs, eastern bluebirds, and more.  Each two page spread shows the animal and its tree home.  Each spread also contains a larger font with simpler text that would read beautifully to younger children.  Smaller text adds details about the animal and its life in the tree often including the raising of offspring.  One of the interesting things is that the holes that these animals use are often created by other creatures or by nature itself.  Some holes are formed by branches breaking off or lightning strikes, others are created by woodpeckers or other hole creators only to be taken over by another animal later.  The information shared will fascinate young readers and possibly inspire an interest in learning more.  The illustrator created the pictures using acrylic and marker on wood merged digitally into a collage.  This gives the tree in each spread an earthy look perfect for highlighting animals living in trees.  The back matter includes additional information about each animal, a selected sources list, and recommended resources.  Once again, Melissa Stewart has presented young readers with a great nonfiction book on an interesting topic.
