REVIEW

The ocean is a marvelously fascinating realm.  Sylvia Earle shares with readers her experiences with the ocean as an explorer and inventor and advocate.  Divided into five chapters, the book takes the reader through a variety of concepts related to the ocean.  The fun thing though is that those concepts are shared through descriptions of some of the adventures that Earle has had during her thirty plus years as a diver and explorer.  Readers are introduced to what the ocean is and why it's important.  Additional chapters share with readers some of the wildlife that live in the oceans, the deep ocean, how the ocean is in trouble, and how people, including readers, can help rescue the ocean.  As with most National Geographic books, the large and plentiful photographs are stunningly beautiful and highlight the amazing world of the ocean very well.  The end of the book includes a glossary, index, and additional resources.  I especially appreciated the lists of ways for ordinary citizens to help preserve and rescue the ocean in both small and big ways.  This book is a great resource for those who are interested in learning more about the ocean in a fascinating and beautifully designed way.
