PICTURE BOOK REVIEWS: Alice and Greta/Clever Little Witch
ABOUT THE BOOK
Alice is a good witch.
And Greta... well, Greta and trouble are never far apart. Alice spends
her time helping others by weaving her enchanting spells. All Greta does
is wreak havoc. But when a forgotten spell comes back to haunt her,
Greta's stuck learning something she should have learned long ago.
REVIEW
Alice and Greta are as different as can be. Alice loves to help others, whereas, Greta loves to torment them. Even when they were in school together their different choices shone in their actions. And while they learned the same spells, they choose to use them quite differently. One day when they face off though, it seems Greta's nastiness will win the day, until Alice reminds her of a lesson from school that she seems to have missed. The sweet tale of the Golden Rule reminds readers of the importance of kindness. It also highlights that the way we see the world often determines the choices we make regarding it. The illustrations are the stronger part of this book, although the spells are quite entertaining. A creative introduction to an important lesson.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Magical mayhem and
hilarity ensue when a clever little witch tries to turn her baby brother
into a goldfish in this funny and imaginative picture book about
sibling rivalry.
Little Linh is the cleverest little witch on Mãi Mãi island. She has everything she could need: a trusty broomstick, a powerful spell book, and a magical pet mouse. She also has a new brother named Baby Phu, and she does not like him one bit. He crashes her broomstick, eats pages out of her spell book, and keeps her up all night. Little Linh tried giving Baby Phu away, but nobody will take him, not even the Orphanage for Lost and Magical Creatures.
So, she’ll just have to try something else…like turning him into a goldfish. The only problem is, Baby Phu ate the second half of the spell. Still, there’s a reason Little Linh is the cleverest little witch. She can guess the second half of the spell…but it might take a few tries.

REVIEW
In this tale of sibling conflict, a young witch does her best to get rid of her little brother. At first she tries to give him away, but no one wants him. Then she tries to use a spell on him, turning him into a goldfish. But it goes awry every time leaving her with large green flying problem. But in her efforts to fix things, she discovers that maybe little brothers aren't quite so bad. This is a cute enough story about a brother and sister who don't get along with some magic thrown in. Any child whose wrestled with having an annoying sibling will be able to relate to Little Linh's frustration. The illustrations are bright and colorful and nicely highlight this tale of sisterly revenge, but I'll admit I didn't particularly love this one. It's a cute enough story for those looking for a magical tale of sibling conflict that turns out fairly well.
