For What It's Worth by Karey White

Twenty-four year-old, Abby Benson has dreams of owning her own wedding cake shop. An inheritance from her aunt gives her the ability to make those dreams come true. She hires Dane, a handsome contractor, to help her get the bakery up and running and soon they’re moving toward their own happy ending.

Unsure what to charge for her cakes, Abby has a crazy idea to let the customer decide what they think their cake is worth. This plan has its ups and downs, but the novelty of the idea makes her a local celebrity. When she is interviewed on television about the unusual idea, business booms and Abby has cake adventures she never dreamed possible. But as her fame grows, Abby is swept up in a whirlwind that threatens everything she values. With the challenges that face her, will she be able to determine what is worth the most?

REVIEW

I find the premise of this book an interesting one. Running a business where the customers get to price the goods seems like a foolish thing to do, but for Abby it works. It works so well in fact that she is soon in over her head and has to decide where her priorities lie.  I think what I like best about this book is how easy it is to relate to Abby and her struggles to determine what matters most to her, her relationships with family and friends or her booming business. And when disaster strikes, what then? I enjoyed reading about Abby's and Dane's relationship and how they overcame the problems that came up, it seemed quite realistic and believable. I highly recommend this one to those who enjoy a fun, clean romance with an entertaining premise (and lots of yummy sounding recipes).

INTERVIEW

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go and what would you do there?

There's so many places I'd like to go. I guess say The United Kingdom. That way I could see Scotland and England.

What is the best thing that has happened to you since being published?

It was a thrill to have my first book, Gifted, nominated for a Whitney Award.

How do you go about getting your book(s) published?

I sent my manuscript to Cedar Fort. They took Gifted and then asked for my next one, which was For What It's Worth.

Do you have a special place where you like to write?

I usually write in my living room on my laptop. I like working on the laptop because I can take it with me and write other places.

Tell us a little bit about your writing background.

I loved writing classes in junior high and high school and took writing classes in college, as well. As a young teenager, I wrote a column for our county newspaper. Once my children were in school, I decided to treat it like a real job and see what happened. So far, so good.

What led you to write For What it's Worth?

I made wedding cakes for about a dozen years. I always thought a story set in a bakery would be fun. When I got the idea for Abby's pricing plan, I was ready to go.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out?
Take classes and workshops to improve your writing. Practice a lot. Don't be afraid.

What's something about yourself that might surprise people?
My parents renovated a schoolhouse when I was a child and for many years, the library was my bedroom. I had floor to ceiling bookshelves. I think it's fitting.
