Gilbert accidentally brings home a slobbery, bite-sized monster in the hilarious latest installment in The Worst! picture book series, where even the strangest of creatures can become the best of friends.
When plucky Gilbert the Goblin and his pal Chicken go camping together, they run into creatures that go bump in the night! The friends immediately flee the woods and head home—after all, everyone knows that monsters are absolutely, undeniably, unequivocally the worst!
But when a shocking stowaway appears in Gilbert’s knapsack, looking awfully cute and extra snuggly, Gilbert is…smitten! Sure, monsters can bite and drool and make a big mess, but they can also steal your heart. It’s a tale so sweet it’s scary!
REVIEW
Gilbert the Goblin goes camping with his friend Chicken and claims to be very 'outdoorsy'. But the illustrations show otherwise with Gilbert struggling with his tent, losing his map, and scrambling up a tree to escape a bigfoot. While roasting pickles over a campfire, he encounters some monsters attracted by the fire. He runs home with his backpack and his remaining pickles. He discovers that he has been accompanied home by a baby monster. As in the other books in the series, Gilbert proceeds to complain about the difficulties in taking care of the baby monster, which one must acknowledge is the case as the illustrations make clear. The baby monster either eats everything or takes a bite out of it (including the book itself). After returning the baby monster to it's family, he does admit that he misses it even though he now has more time to spend with his pet sock slugs. The story ends with a laugh as Gilbert learns once again to take the bad with the good. Another amusing title in the series that fans will enjoy with lots of fun details (boy, baby monsters sure leave a lot of dung behind!). And the idea of roasting pickles should provoke a laugh as well. Another winning title in a fun series! Recommended.
