REVIEW
Appealing digitally-created illustrations and an intriguing topic make this book very kid-friendly. Illustrations of animals noticing a smell, "Ewww" or "Yuck" open a two page spread describing a smell before the page turn reveals the culprit with a brief description of the smell and it's purpose. For example, a skunk spray is described as 'rotten eggs and smelly feet" before the reveal indicates a skunk sprays the nasty odor to protect itself. The facial expressions on the animals and the visual image of the smell spreading across each spread highlights the power of each aroma even though the reader can't smell it. Thank goodness! This would be a very unpleasant book otherwise. Other animals and plants that produce impressive odors include the stinkbird, the musk ox, the corpse flower, a bombardier beetle, a sea hare, and the binturong (bearcat). A few other animals that create strong smells are summarized on the final spread of the book. With it's appealing, discovery-type format, gorgeous, expressive illustrations, and it's fascinating information, this book is a surefire winner among it's intended audience. Highly recommended for a stinky good time.
