Told entirely in gorgeous illustrations, The Boy and the Elephant shows readers the power of friendship. Using pencil and oil paints on watercolor paper, Blackwood shares the wonder to be found in a connection with nature, no matter how small. A young boy has 'befriended' a group of trees living on an empty plot between his apartment building and the next, a group of trees that resemble an elephant. When he discovers the plans to remove the trees to build something else, the boy searches for a solution. Finally he visits his friend in desperation and something magical, and unexpected happens. It takes a deft hand to tell a story for children using pictures only. Yet Blackwood does just that, she's created a magical, marvelous tale that encourages children to not only use their imaginations but also their hearts in searching for solutions to life's challenges. Bound to induce smiles and cries of wonder, a perfect book for enjoying singly or in a group. Highly recommended.
