THREE EARLY READER REVIEWS with lots of rhyming fun!
REVIEW
Og, a monster, and Mog, a giant cat, build a robot together. Dog, being jealous, runs away with a cog from the robot. Can Og and Mog recover their cog and make up with Dog before it's too late? There is something so innately delightful about reading a book chock full of rhyming words. Elio's bright, colorful, fun illustrations nicely complement the large, easy to read text. Perfect for children just learning to read, this would be a fun book for an adult and child to read together. Children are likely to enjoy the way the rhymes feel on their tongue. Og, Mog, and Dog all make for relatable characters as well. Recommended.
REVIEW
Nat the Cat makes a snack. He refuses to share his snack with Rat. But his anger leads to a bit of a disaster. In this amusing early reader, Nat the Cat does not want to cooperate with the narrator and share his snack with Pat the Rat. This makes Pat the Rat so sad. But somehow things work out in the end. Using a great combination of narrative text and dialogue, Lerner provides young readers with a chance to learn the difference between narration and dialogue with the use of speech bubbles. With themes related to learning to share and forgiveness, Lerner packs an awful lot into this short little book. The strong lines and simple background keep the focus on the characters and the situation. The use of repetitive words adds to the readability of the story. And as with all his books, the expressions on the faces of the characters combine nicely with the text to make for a delightful read.

A T-rex on a unicycle, a triceratops on a tricycle, a stegosaurus on roller blades, and a brontosaurus on a skateboard arrive at the park to race around the track. The rhyming, rhythmic text makes for an exciting read aloud as the tension of the race builds before the somewhat unexpected climax. Windness's use of bright, eye-catching color stands out along with the catchy text. This is the kind of book that a child is likely to want to hear over and over again, especially the dinosaur-loving ones. A fun book bound to be popular with children just learning to read.
