WILD & WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY: The Book of Turtles by Sy Montgomery & Matt Patterson
ABOUT THE BOOK
Everyone loves turtles. And no wonder: long-lived, unhurried, and ancient, these shelled reptiles are fascinating.
Turtles are also endlessly surprising. There are turtles with soft shells, turtles with googly eyes, turtles with necks longer than their bodies, and turtles whose shells glow in the dark!
And each turtle, of each of the more than 300 kinds, is an individual. You'll meet some of them here: Lonesome George, the last of his kind on Earth. And Myrtle, the 90-year-old green sea turtle, who has 7,000 followers on Facebook.
What questions might you ask a turtle? You'll find many of the answers in this gorgeous compendium--and perhaps be inspired to help at a time that these reptiles, who evolved at the same time as the dinosaurs, face the deadliest dangers of their more than 380-million year history.
REVIEW
What a stunning book! Full of stunning illustrations and fascinating information, the book taught me a lot about turtles. The wide variety of different species and the ways they live are highlighted in this picture book for children. Turtles climbing fences, turtles with heads that look like leaves, and turtles communicate underwater are all highlighted in this book. The author and illustrator combine their impressive talents to create this work of art that I very much plan to share with my students. Sharing stories of specific animals along with specific species provides an intimate look at an animal that is all too easy to overlook. I often prefer photographs in my science books, but the illustrations here are so amazing that they come very close to looking like photos but with a soft artistic touch. The paintings are just amazing. All I can do is advise you to look at them yourself. One of my favorite books of 2023.
