PICTURE BOOK REVIEW: The Loud Librarian by Jenna Beatrice & Erika Lynne Jones

So often librarians are stereotyped as older women wearing cardigans and glasses. Now sometimes they look like that but just as often we don't. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting Penelope who wants to be a librarian but has a hard time following directions. Despite her preparation (alphabetizing the pantry at home, pushing a laundry cart on a skateboard, and due date sticking her brother's coloring book), things don't go well for Penelope. Penelope's loud voice tends to cause chaos as she knocks books on the floor and disturbs young readers in the library. Penelope's heartbroken when it appears that she just isn't right for the library. Or is she? Is there a way for Penelope to follow her dreams and be a great student librarian? You bet there is! But you'll have to read the book for yourself to find out the idea that Penelope comes up with to follow her dream. I found a lot to love in this book. Penelope's enthusiasm and hard work make her a very winning main character. There's also a lot of humor here as well, everything from books organized by color (libraries generally don't do this anymore, but it's easier to create than individual books with call numbers), and the vast destruction that Penelope causes is reminiscent of a tall tale. But seriously there are people who can't be quiet and I love that the book emphasizes that there is a place for everyone at the library.
