REVIEW
Larios and Paschkis take the reader or listener on an entertaining romp through the alphabet. After picking a pretty flower, a young mouse starts the story with a loud "ACHOO" send a bee buzzing on its way. Using a variety of sounds and a variety of animals, the chaos grows and grows threatening to upend the mouse's efforts to deliver the flower to a rather unexpected friend. This is a clever way to tell a story while sharing the alphabet and the concept of onomatopoeia. Paschkis's bright, colorful illustrations beautifully highlight the chaos and confusion. She also provides hints on each page about what is coming next which makes the book a fun one to use to talk about prediction and how illustrators sometimes give hints about what's coming up next. A fun ABC book perfect for sharing in the lap or at story time.
ABOUT THE BOOK
What would happen if
your teddy bear stowed away in your backpack and followed you to school?
And what if your teddy convinced all your friends’ stuffed animals to
come along for the party? Would you believe they might sneak into the
cafeteria to play Pizza Disc, head to the band room to put bubbles in
the wind instruments, make a clever glue trap for the art teacher, and
roll around in finger paint as well? Luckily, the principal remembers
what it was like to be young and may let the rambunctious teddy bear and
crew off just this once. Author Jancee Dunn and illustrator Scott Nash
bring Teddy and friends back for more mischief in a high-spirited tale
of uninhibited fun.
REVIEW
The title of this book attracts child readers like crazy. The classes I read this to were all fans of it. The teddy bear's mischief made them smile or giggle. My personal favorite part was the visit to the teacher's lounge. If only teacher's lounges were really like that. I'd love to have a trampoline, ice cream parlor, and climbing wall to enjoy in my nonexistent free moments. This tale of a mischievous teddy bear and his stuffed friends makes for a fun read. The large size of the book and illustrations makes it especially appropriate for using with a group. I'll admit I didn't absolutely adore the ending, but it works. A fun read aloud for youngsters who enjoy a funny book of mischief.
