PICTURE BOOK REVIEWS: Snow Still/The LIttle Snowplow Wishes for Snow/A Day for Skating/The Boy and the Bear

ABOUT THE BOOK

A little fawn wakes up to discover that the world outside has changed after a snowfall. As he takes his first faltering steps into this exciting snow-white world, he finds there's so much to discover and explore. And when it's time to return to the warmth of home, his parents are waiting right there for him.

REVIEW

Using two word phrases that start with the word snow, this cute board book follows a young fawn exploring a snow filled world.  The illustrations are adorable.  It would be easy to get repetitious in a book like this but it doesn't happen.  Each two-page spread shows the fawn enjoying a different aspect of snow from a variety of different perspectives, sizes, and angles.  The repetition in the text makes for a smooth, easy read.  There is much here for an adult reader and young listener to talk about and enjoy.

ABOUT THE BOOK

The little snowplow loves his job on the Mighty Mountain Road Crew, but the work he loves best is plowing snow. Throughout the year, he wishes for snow to come, but winter begins without a single flake in sight. As the weeks pass and the little snowplow's birthday approaches, he starts to wonder whether it will snow at all. Will the little snowplow's birthday dreams come true?

REVIEW

The little snowplow enjoys his work on the road crew but he misses plowing snow.  He eagerly awaits the arrival of snow but it seems like it will never come.  As he prepares for his birthday, he sadly tries not to think about a winter with no snow.  Little snowplow is an adorable character that I couldn't help rooting for as he continued to work hard at all of his jobs despite his repeated disappointments.  The illustrations are enjoyable and do a great job of highlighting the characters and their struggles.  The theme is a great one as it focuses on not giving up on one's dreams despite disappointments, but continuing to work hard regardless.   A fun read for young vehicle fans.

ABOUT THE BOOK

In a sweet rhyming tale, a young child's first skating adventure on a frozen pond ends with a cozy bedtime story.

Tap and step,
then slide and turn.
Whoops! Fall down.
That's how we learn.

On a brisk winter's day, the frozen pond is crisscrossed by figure skaters, hockey players, new skaters, and old pros, all gliding across the ice. It's time to bundle up, lace your skates, and give it a try -- then head inside for cocoa and snacks when your cheeks grow rosy and your toes are cold. Back at home, warm bedtime rituals make for the end of a perfect day. But when darkness falls at the pond, who will come out to skate?

REVIEW

This book brought back memories of skating on a local rink with all the accompanying experiences.  Rosy cheeks, hot chocolate, and picking yourself up off the ground are all things that anyone who has skated on a outdoor rink or pond will have experienced.  And those are indeed the experiences that the young girl has in this book.  The catchy rhymes combine nicely with the sweet illustrations to remind the reader/listener what skating can be like, especially when enjoyed with friends and family.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Friends come in all shapes and sizes and sometimes the best friends are the most unlikely of all...

When a lonely little boy receives an invitation to play written on a paper boat, it seems that he has found the best friend he's been longing for - at last! But Bear isn't quite the playmate the boy had imagined. If only he knew how to play games properly! But when Bear starts to build a treehouse, the boy is intrigued and a magical summer begins. As autumn passes and the first winter snowflakes start to fall, the boy is left alone, and only then does he truly realise what he has lost . . . Until at last spring comes again and the friends are joyfully reunited with a very special hug!

REVIEW

A young boy seeking a playmate sees the bear.  But the bear was a bear not a boy to play with and too shy to say anything besides.  Only after exchanging paper boat messages with a mysterious someone does the boy open himself up to something different than he expected.  But when the games they attempt to play don't work, they have to come up with a different idea for playing together.  Just as they figure things out, winter arrives and bear must go.  The boy sadly waits the whole winter to see his friend again.  I love the themes of this story.  Reaching out to someone different, someone unexpected, learning to adapt when things don't turn out the way you expect, and waiting patiently life disappoints you all make for important ideas expressed in this beautifully simple picture book.  A story that can teach but does so in a non-pushy, non-didactic way.
