REVIEW

Marjory Stoneman Douglas's love for the Everglades shown through her years of work in preserving the wetlands. Marjory's River of Grass tells the story of Marjory's growing up and developing a love for her adopted home after moving there to live with her father after graduating from college. As a journalist she covered the Everglades in some of her stories and was sad to discover the plans to reclaim the land for human use. She became committed to preserving the wetlands as a national park. Only after years of work, including writing a book and facing off with politicians, land developers, and sugar growers did Marjory achieve her goal. This informative picture book tells Marjory's story in an accessible way. The importance of native habitats is highlighted as is the theme of persistence and commitment. Even now the fight to preserve the Everglades and other natural wild places continues thanks to those who follow in Marjory's footsteps. An author's note and bibliography provide additional information in the back matter. This inspiring book reminds readers, young and old, of the importance of fighting for the world's remaining wild places. Recommended.
