ABOUT THE BOOK

Calling readers and daydreamers, word mavens and lovers of adventure! This celebration of the power of books is a rallying cry for letting imaginations soar.

We learn important stuff from books.
We learn to speak and think.
We learn why icebergs stay afloat…
and why Titanics sink.

Have you ever wanted to climb to the top of Everest with one hand behind your back? Kiss a crocodile all by yourself on the Nile River? How about learning how to bottle moonlight, or track a distant star? There are endless things to discover and whole universes to explore simply by reading a book. But books are only smears of ink without the reader’s mind to give their letters meaning and bring them to life. With a rollicking, rhyming text and delightful artwork, poet and storyteller Allan Wolf and illustrator Brianne Farley remind us that books, no matter how they may be consumed, give readers of every background an opportunity to expand their world and spark their imagination. With infectious enthusiasm, No Buddy Like a Book offers an ode to the wonders of language—written, spoken, and everything in between.

REVIEW

This lovely book highlights the wonders that can come from reading a book.  Books offer much to the right reader.  A chance to learn about numerous topics as well as explore one's own imagination.  I loved this stanza,

"But books are only smears of ink
                    without the reader's mind
                    to give the letters meaning
and to read between the lines."

This reminds me that every book becomes something different depending on the reader.  Each reader to the right book.  As a librarian this is one of my mantras.  The gorgeous illustrations show some of the magnificent journeys that books can take readers on.  The emphasis is on the power of the imagination combined with the delight of a book to take the reader to different places.  Astronomy, biology, geography, and other numerous topics combined with a reader's imagination can bring all kinds of learning and enjoyment.  This book is a celebration of all that a book can be when paired with a reader's imagination.

REVIEW

Steve Light has created a delightful world called Whiskers Hollow.  There's even a detailed map on the end pages, I love maps.  Bear sets out for a drive through the branches and trees of Whiskers Hollow.  When he has an accident, he needs a new headlight.  He seeks the company of his friends, Rabbit, Mouse, and Donkey.  Rabbit comes despite his constant hunger.  Mouse brings a first aide kit, just in case.   And Donkey leads the way to Elephant's Old Junk Tree.  A rickety bridge and a thorny tunnel lead the friends to a junkyard full of tires, tricycles and other pieces of junk.  A mishap at the junkyard has Bear, Mouse, Rabbit, and Donkey rolling in the mud.  After finding the needed junk, the friends end their adventure by returning home.  A fun tale of friendship and adventure with delightful illustrations full of details that provide much to enjoy..
