SERIES THURSDAY: Travels with Gannon & Wyatt: Greenland by Patti Wheeler & Keith Hemstreet
ABOUT THE BOOK
Upon arriving in Ilulissat, Greenland, Gannon and Wyatt prepare for the adventure of a lifetime—a dogsled expedition in the Arctic! But before the explorers even crack a whip, they receive a desperate mayday call from an Inuit family that is stranded in the far north. Suddenly, Gannon and Wyatt’s expedition to study climate change and Greenlandic culture turns into something far more dangerous—a mission to save lives. As they rush north to rescue the family, led by Inuit guides, the brothers must steer clear of deadly hidden crevasses, hungry polar bears, and bitter cold as they race into an Arctic super-storm, putting even more lives in jeopardy—their own.
In the tradition of the historic journals kept by explorers such as Lewis and Clark, Dr. David Livingstone, and Captain James Cook comes the adventure series Travels with Gannon and Wyatt. From Africa to the South Pacific, these twin brothers have traveled the world. You never know what they will encounter as they venture into the wild, but one thing is certain wherever Gannon and Wyatt go, adventure is their constant companion.
You can find Gannon and Wyatt’s blog, photographs, and video footage from their real-life expeditions at travelswithgannonandwyatt.com.
REVIEW
There are a lot of things that I really enjoy about the Gannon & Wyatt series. First, I love visiting different countries and following the characters on their different adventures. Second, while there is much in each book that is educational, the adventures take precedence over any messages. Plus, these books are based on the real-life travels and adventures of a real set of twins named Gannon & Wyatt (see http://travelswithgannonandwyatt.com/) In this volume of the series, the twins are visiting Greenland as part of a project documenting global warming and its effects. While there, the get to put their newly acquired dog sledding skills into action. Things start off well, but take a turn for the worse when the group gets news of a native Inuit family who is stranded on the ice when their dogs get sick. As Gannon & Wyatt and their guides head off to help the family, a massive storm hits and Wyatt gets lost. With a damaged sled, Wyatt is unable to continue and must build himself a temporary shelter, hoping that someone will be able to find him. But as the storm continues to rage, Gannon and the guides must make some difficult choices about what to do and who to help. The inclusion of actual photographs makes the story feel all the more real. This is a fabulous series for students interested in traveling or nature.
