REVIEW

National Geographic Kids Chapters provides interesting, beautifully designed books that are bound to appeal to child readers, especially readers who love stories about animals.  In this book, there are three fun stories about animals that show intelligence in their special talents.  An African gray parrot that seems to understand what she is asked to do, a very friendly performing pig, and a pug that enjoys skydiving.  I enjoyed hearing the details of each animal and how they developed their special skills.  I have no doubt that children will be equally fascinated.  The addition of photographs and pronunciations of big words and you have a great book for young readers.

REVIEW

Stories about remarkable animals always draw me in and the same is true for child readers.  National Geographic just seems to have a sense for the kind of stories that appeal to readers.  Here we have stories about a dog that saves a woman's life and nearly loses her own, but thanks to the love of her owners as well as people from across the country, including the animal hospital, she survived but with only three legs.  Yet her loving nature never changed.

Dolphins saving people from sharks is a fascinating nature event that has occurred more than once.  And since dolphins are a popular animal with children, this story is sure to fascinate them.

The two stories about the gorillas helping young children who fell into their enclosures really makes one wonder what caused them to behave the way they did.  Several theories are presented but the fact is there is no way to know for sure.  We can just be grateful they did what they did and the children survived.

ABOUT THE BOOK

This is the first in a line of four books within the National Geographic Kids Chapters series that explore unexpected animal bonds. In this book you'll meet four unlikely pairings, including Billy and Lilly. Billy the boxer adopted Lilly the goat when she was abandoned by her mother. Billy and Lilly are rarely apart since Billy has taken on the role of Lilly's protector, caretaker, and constant companion. This and the other stories in this book will enchant readers and empower them to devour the more text-heavy "grown up" style of the book, while still keeping the story easily digestable for a hestitant reader.

REVIEW

I've heard arguments before that animals don't have any intelligence, but stories like the ones in this book convince me over and over that that is not true.  Here we have an orangutan befriending a dog, a gorilla who adores cats, a grayhound that befriends animals of all kinds, and a hippo adopting a giant tortoise as family. Once again credit goes to National Geographic for picking interesting stories and sharing them in a beautifully designed package.  A winner for children who love inspiring animal stories.
