SPECTACULAR SPOTS and other fabulous patterns!

ABOUT THE BOOK

With engaging rhymes and bright, bold images, award-winning author and illustrator Susan Stockdale introduces young readers to the many ways in which animals benefit from their spots. An afterword tells a little bit more about each animal and where it lives, and readers can test their knowledge of animal spots with a fun matching game at the end!

REVIEW

Susan Stockdale has created a fun book that works well as a read aloud for both personal and classroom use.  This book along with her others introduces patterns to young readers.  The text of the book is rhyming and works well for reading out loud.  The additional information about each animal at the end helps explain why these animals have spots.  The guessing game makes for an interactive experience for young readers.  The gorgeous illustrations highlight each animal and the spots that make them so distinctive.

IDEAS FOR USING IN THE CLASSROOM OR AT HOME

Combine this book with any of Stockdale's others (especially Stripes of all Types) and Jane Brocket's Spotty, Stripy, Swirly: What are Patterns? for a great story time or lesson about patterns of all kinds in both the natural world as well as the man made world.  The options for crafts, games, and outdoor and indoor 'treasure hunts' are endless.  Here are a few possibilities:

  1. Play the identifying game at the back of the book.  For an extension activity, have the child(ren) create their own puzzles from animals they identify.
  2. Draw pictures of their own imaginary animals with a variety of different patterns and then come up with logical reasons for those patterns (or silly reasons).
  3. Take the child on a 'treasure' hunt for patterns throughout the house or yard or neighborhood.
  4. Play pictionary using the animals from the book.
