Down at the bottom of the tall buildings of New York City, Magnolia Wu sits inside her parents’ laundromat. With each new encounter, Magnolia learns that when you’re bold enough to head into the unknown, things start falling into place.

Using humor and a bit of a mystery, Miller shares with readers the story of 10-year-old Magnolia. She lives with her parents above the laundromat they own and run called Bing Qi Ling Bubbles Laundromat. Not only does she not have any friends but she doesn't appreciate the teasing she gets because of her family and home. Iris, a girl from California, befriends Magnolia and they set out to find the homes of the lost socks that Magnolia has been collecting. Not only does Magnolia learn about being a friend, but she also learns interesting things about her neighbors as well as her parents. Magnolia discovers that there is more to most people than one sees on the outside and that being a friend can be hard work. She also runs into the harmful ways that people can act as well including microagressions and vandalism. With moments both humorous and heart-felt, Magnolia Wu gives readers the gift of learning to see the world in new ways through the eyes of a 10-year-old Chinese American girl. Magnolia's frustrations and confusion are highly relatable as well as sympathetic. Highly recommended.
