CHRISTMAS PICTURE BOOK: Snowmen's Twelve Nights of Christmas by Carolyn Buehner & Mark Buehner
ABOUT THE BOOK
REVIEW
The Buehner's have created yet another delightful snowmen story. This time readers get to see snow penguins, snow rabbits, a snow dog with a sock tongue, lots of snow squirrels, and the familiar pickle-nosed snowman. Based on the popular song The Twelve Days of Christmas, the book follows the antics of a snow dog chasing a variety of different creatures up a tree. The text makes for fun reading and could easily be sung using the tune from the original song. But as with the other snowmen books, the illustrations make this book an easy sell to children. Full of fun details Mark Buehner's enjoyable paintings provide readers and listeners much to discuss. The hidden pictures turn a short read into a much longer one, although this complicates the process of reading the book to a group. Once the song is finished the book ends with a magnificent page turn that leads to a book turn spread (the book is turned vertically in order for readers to fully enjoy the illustration of the tree with all the mentioned creatures in it). Thus reading this to a class using an eBook doesn't work so well as the eBook can't be turned. This is one that needs to be experienced in print to be fully appreciated.
