Twitter: @EdwardHemingway Instagram: @edwardhemingway A charming video on the backstory behind Pigeon & Cat: https://vimeo.com/626765984 REVIEW Cat lives by himself in a cardboard box in an empty lot behind an abandoned building. He prefers to live alone and leaves the lot only to find food. Things change when he finds a bird egg and it hatches to become his only friend. She grows up and finds her wings, learning to fly, and eventually leaving the lot to explore the city. She brings things back from her explorations that cat uses to decorate the lonely lot. After a storm one night Pigeon doesn't come back one night, Cat leaves the lot to go looking for her. This story tenderly highlights the difference a friend makes in one's life. Cat changes when Pigeon becomes his friend and companion. Pigeon is the reason, the only reason, he chooses to leave the lot. When he does so his knowledge of the world expands and he learns to open up and reach out to others. Hemingway's adorable illustrations wonderfully highlight the friendship between Cat and Pigeon as well as the world they inhabit. One clever touch is the way Hemingway uses symbols for the Pigeon's voice. At one point he has to 'translate' Pigeon's words. It's impossible not to smile as Pigeon and Cat open up their empty lot to others around them and it becomes a bright, beautiful, loving community. A sweet tale of the power of kindness to change the world. SAMPLE ILLUSTRATIONS |
