For dog lovers young or old, this book makes a great introduction to the process of training a dog. While the book is addressed to younger readers the information is just as valuable for adults. The book begins by providing readers with some important background information about dogs, their physiology and how to interpret body language. The authors emphasize the need for training to be adapted to the abilities of both human and animal. Some dogs can learn more capably than others. Using striking photographs, and step by step instructions, readers are presented with basic, expert, and advanced tricks that a dog can be taught. Chapters at the end give tips for problem solving various issues that can arise with a dog as a pet. Additional information includes tips for various activities that can be done with dogs, information about specially trained dogs and things that can be made for a dog. REVIEW
I, like many others, assumed that cats are just too independent to train. But as Tracey West & veterinarian Gary Weitzman explain in this book, that is not the case. The book covers a number of important topics in addition to instructions for teaching specific commands. Basic information about cats, their anatomy, and behavior provide the reader with a good background into their cat and why it behaves the way it does. Advice about how to prepare to train a cat and things to consider before starting the process is given. Specific instructions for teaching basic, intermediate, and advanced skills are provided which encourage consistence practice but remind the trainer to keep the animals individual personality and needs in mind. With a beautiful design, easy-to-use format, and gorgeous photographs, this book provides an excellent resource for children looking to do more than hang out with their pet.
