REVIEW

Each of the books in the Doggy Defenders series focuses on the working life of a real dog and his/her real-life partner.  Each book is written in large, easy to read, simplified text perfect for young listeners or readers.  The photographs match up beautifully with the text and clearly show what the text explains.  The books have enough details to provide background on each job and each specific dog and human partner.  But as with so many National Geographic books the real winner here are the photographs which show so beautifully the animals and their partners.

Tiger, The Police Dog, follows a Belgian Malinois that works as a police dog in Washington D.C. with his partner, Aida Rodriguez.  The book follows Tiger and Aida through a typical working day as they check various locations for dangerous materials.  The book also shows through the large appealing illustrations the rewards that Tiger receives for a job well done.  There is a question and answer section at the back of the book that offers more information about Aida and Tiger as well as some safety tips.

Dolley, The Fire Dog takes the reader behind the scenes with a fire investigator and his dog as they search for signs of fire starting liquid and the cause of a fire.  I found this one particularly interesting because I didn't know that dogs were used for that.  Dolley in training and in the field are shown along with her human partner.  Their life outside of work is briefly highlighted as well.  A question and answer section along with safety tips round out this interesting book.

Willow, The Therapy Dog shows the life of a trained therapy dog who visits a hospital, a school, and a home for veterans to provide comfort to people.  With her human partner, Megan, Willow touches lives and gives people a reason to smile.  It was a pleasure to read about the great work that Willow and Megan do helping people heal.  A question and answer section and tips on being a good friend finish up this sweet book.

Stella, The Search Dog tells the story of Stella, a bloodhound, who works as a search and rescue dog.  She helps find hikers and others who get lost in the wilderness. The book follows Stella through a training exercise as well as a search for a missing hiker.  It was especially interesting to read about her trip on a helicopter.  A nice glimpse into the life of a working dog whose efforts mean so much to so many people.  A question and answer section is followed by some safety tips.
